What Science Questions — And Why We're Transparent About It

Binaural Beats — EEG Entrainment Not Guaranteed

Only ~36% of EEG studies confirm direct frequency-following response. The subjective benefits (reduced anxiety, improved focus) are well-documented, but the mechanism may not be purely "brainwave synchronization." It may work partly through relaxation, expectancy, or auditory attention effects. We use binaural beats as one layer among five — never as a standalone claim.

Amplitude Modulation (formerly "Isochronic Tones")

Traditional isochronic tones (sharp ON/OFF pulses) produce stronger EEG responses (Auditory Steady-State Response) but can be disruptive to sleep. We use sinusoidal amplitude modulation — smoother and more comfortable — which has less research than the clinical trapezoid variety. Our approach prioritizes sleep quality over raw entrainment strength.

Long-Term Subconscious Reprogramming

While TMR is proven for memory consolidation, the concept of "reprogramming" deep-seated beliefs over months is an extrapolation from the sleep science literature — not a directly tested protocol. What We Removed — And Why

Many audio wellness products include these elements. After thorough review of the literature, we chose to exclude them from Somnivox:

Origin: medieval numerology, not neuroscience. No peer-reviewed RCTs demonstrate effects beyond placebo. The "432Hz tuning" claim has no physiological basis — concert pitch is an arbitrary cultural convention.

Continuous Pink Noise

Phase-locked pink noise during slow-wave sleep shows promise (Ngo et al., 2013). However, continuous (non-phase-locked) pink noise may reduce REM sleep duration (Penn Medicine, 2025). Since we cannot phase-lock to live EEG in a consumer product, we replaced pink noise with a clean ambient resonance pad.

Sub-Bass Infrasound

Frequencies below 20Hz cannot be reproduced by consumer headphones. Claims of "cellular vibration" are not supported by controlled human studies.

40Hz Gamma Audio Stimulation

The Iaccarino et al. (2016) study in Nature used 40Hz light flickering (not audio) to reduce amyloid plaques in mice. Audio-only 40Hz studies in humans have not replicated these effects. We will not include this until peer-reviewed human evidence exists.
